Las Villas Del Norte The Pena Descendancy by Carrol (Kelly) A Norquest, Jr.

I want to thank Jose Garza for pointing me to the following book. Las Villas Del Norte The Pena Descendancy by Carrol (Kelly) A Norquest, Jr. I had the opportunity of reading a copy donated by the author to the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg Texas.

What interested me was that Jose had said that this book contained the 1874 Census for Arcabuz, Tamaulipas.  Turns out that it only referenced another book coauthored by Mr. Norquest that contained the Census. By the way I located the other book and got to see the transcription of the census.

I know, I digress, well turns out that this book Las Villas Del Norte had most of my Pena ancestors in it. As Mr. Norquest explains this book is only based on secondary sources but even at that it is very easy to trace original sources if you follow the authors trail. Also so thankful that I located this book since it has over 900 individuals covering from the late 1600′s to present day.

If you have Pena ancestry from Laredo, Revilla, Mier, Arcabuz, Miguel Aleman, Hidalgo and Starr County I highly recommend this book. Also in general, if you have Pena ancestry check it out since you never know you might find your ancestors within the pages of this book. That was the case with one of my friends Joe Gonzalez, he very easily found his great grandparents thus helping him break a brick wall that he had.

Maria Rosa Garcia, 1800 Church Death in Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

This is the 1800 Church death record of my 6th great grandmother Maria Rosa Guerra. This document indicates that she was the widow of Aparicio Pena and that she was a resident of Los Hoyos (present day Los Aldamas, Nuevo Leon, Mexico). I have yet to find out whom her parents were.

Jose Antonio Eulogio Flores and Nicolasa Salinas, 1804 Church Marriage in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico

Jose Antonio Eulogio Flores and Nicolasa Salinas are the 5th great grandparents of my wife. This document lists Jose Antonio Flores and Maria Ysavel Salinas as being Eulogio’s Parents. Eulogios father Jose Antonio was the owner of porcion 38, 39, and 40 in Hidalgo County and Starr County. Maria Nicolasa’s parents are listed as being Jose Miguel Salinas and Juliana Gonzalez. Nicolasa was the Original Grantee of Los Maguelles tract in Starr and Hidalgo Counties. This document is very interesting since it lists Eulogio as being from El Zacate (present day Doctor Coss, Nuevo Leon) and Nicolasa as being from Mier, then El Zacate and finally Reinosa. This document also indicates that they are currently residing in Las Cuevas (present day Cuevitas, Texas). Oldest document that I have found naming this small community.

Happy Birthday, WeAreCousins!!!

Today marks the first year anniversary of this blog. I just want to take the time to thank all the readers whom have made this possible through your emails and constant reminder that this blog has helped many not just me.

It is you all what makes me keep going. Even-though I have not kept up to date with some things, “Newsletter”.

Here are some numbers:

This blog had almost 61,000 page views and over 10,000 unique visitors of these almost 3,000 are returning visitors. These are quick estimates based on Google Analytics and Blogger.

I just hope that I can keep it up and continue to help others. Also hoping that this websites reach is even greater next year.

Before you stop reading, here is a dare. I dare you to start your own Genealogy Blog. If you do and need help let me know, I will help you. Lets see if anyone takes it.

Online Digital Images of Reynosa Church Marriages from 1790 to 1810, Hosted by UTPA

I recently started to research my wife’s side of the family,  only to find that tracing Original sources is getting to be more challenging than what I thought. I had for what ever reason thought that most of her family would be listed in the Camargo Church records but after analyzing the indexes by SAGA I promptly determined that only some of her family can be found there. Note, these records have not been indexed by Family Search.

I found secondary sources with dates and places pointing to Reynosa, unfortunately they did not list their sources. Turns out that Reynosa’s Church records are not online at Family Search, by the way Camargo’s are. Some initial research indicated that these records had been lost to time but I was not going to settle for that. I keep digging around and I found that the Universtity of Texas Pan American in Edinburg Texas has some of the Marriages online. You can browse the Reynosa Church Marriage Records from 1790 to 1810 online. I found several Marriages within a few minutes.

Also the library has more marriages and baptismal records microfilmed. I have yet to analyse them but I did take a peek at them and they look very promising. I am planing on making an index of them and if anyone wants to volunteer let me know.

This is the 1802 Marriage record of my 4th great grandparents Jose Carlos Valentin de La Garza Pena and Maria Gertrudis Pena. Carlo’s parents are listed as being Francisco Angel de la Garza and Maria Cayetana Pena. Gertrudis parents are listed as Antonio Garcia and Maria Quiteria Alanis. This document also demonstrates that Antonio was laready diseased by the time this marriage occurred and that she was originally from la Lajilla which is a small town not far from Carlos town of Arcabuz.
