Last Names of Nuevo Leon

This is the November 16, 1692 baptism record of Joseph de Alanis, my 8th great-grandfather, who was baptized in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

As the record indicates Joseph was the son of Miguel de Alanis and Maria de la Rosa. He grows up to marry Maria Theresa Rodriguez de Montemayor the daughter of Juan Rodriguez de Montemayor and Maria Rosa Ruiz.

Below is the transcription of the above baptism record.

  2. Hi Moises. My name is Mike Sheets and the past two years I have been doing genealogy work for my brother Eddie Martinez. Yours and his family crosses many times. Joseph de Alanis is his 7GGF. I know the marriage record of his parents reads as you have written, but it leads to a question. Maria de la Rosa. Is this not Maria de la Rosa Rodriguez de Montemayor Ayala daughter of Commandante Juan Francisco Rodriguez de Montemayor and Ramona de Ayala Orvalle? Am I wrong to add family surnames to keep the people straight.

    Thank you,

    Mike Sheets

    1. It could be but I have not come across a record indicating this. If so, then they would be first cousins and the marriage record does not indicate any relationship between them. If you have a source let me know, I would love to link her up to them.

    2. Ok after reading a few more comments i see I’m not the only one wondering why the use of only one surname as i find it useful to use both. I also understand why now only 1 surname was mentions since the parents have not been documented yet. Got it …

  3. Joseph Alanis & Maria Teresa Rodriguez de Montemayor are my 6th great grandparents. I will send you a descendants report shortly.

  4. Wow i feel old as i show him as my 4th great grandfather. 🙂 Just one question you only show one surname and i was wondering if i could confirm Miguel Alanis Sanchez & Maria de la Rosa Rodriguez de Montemayor as full surnames. My grandmother was an Alanis.
