User Request – Andrew Garza or Salazar, More Information Needed

I received this request a couple of days ago from Anna Garza Rosamond and just hope that by posting it someone may be able to have an answer.

Hi. My name is Anna Garza Rosamond. I am trying to find my father’s family. He was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas sometime around 1900-1905. He used the name Andrew Garza after coming to the US as a child, but I know that was not his birth surname. The truth is we just don’t know as he kept this info from all his children. My older sister once claimed his surname was Salazar and my brother recently took a Y-DNA test through Family Tree DNA and the only high level match for him was to a Flavio Salazar. So far this Mr. Salazar has not responded to any of our queries. I have pictures of my father’s parents whose names I don’t know, but I know he had two sisters, probably named Celia and Lilia. I also have photos of some of his family taken in either Matamoros or Monterrey in the late 1950s. I will be glad to forward the pictures to anyone who thinks they might be able to identify them. Any help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

If anyone has any answers or suggestions write them on the comment area of this page or send me an email and I will forward it to Anna.

Vecinos de Cerralvo 1630 – 1760, Guillermo Garmendia Leal

Cerralvo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico was founded as early as the 1590’s but the church and civil records were either lost or destroyed up until 1761. As Mr. Garmendia states, this means that the documents up to eight generations or more are forever gone.

In his book Vecinos de Cerralvo Mr. Garmendia compiled the names of people that where from Cerralvo from 1630 to 1760. He obtained them from every surrounding town’s archive or church records.

If your research has lead you to Cerralvo during this time period this book is worth checking out.

The University of Texas Pan American has a copy and if you would like you cna buy the booka t for $45.00.

Index to the Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara, Two Volumes Covering 1653 – 1779

If your ancestors lived in the Texas, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila region and had a marriage dispensation before 1779 it had to be granted by the Bishop of Guadalajara since this huge area was under its ecclesiastic jurisdiction.

The good thing is that you do not have to browse through the thousands of records since Raul J. Guerra, Jr., Nadine M. Vasquez, and Baldomero Vela, Jr. have already done it for us. All you have to do is to get a hold of their two volumes titled;

INDEX TO THE GE INVESTIGATIONS OF THE DIOCESE OF GUADALAJARA Provinces of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Nuevo Santander, Texas 1751- 1779

Check availability at the University of Texas Pan American

When Crispin Rendon told me in an email that these two books had been the best investment he ever made, I was a bit skeptical until I had the opportunity to browse, search, and find my ancestors in its pages.

Just as a small tip I have noticed that these two books go hand in hand with  the following website, when trying to locate the original document.

If you live in the Rio Grande Valley you are in luck since both books are available at the University of Texas Pan American to check availability check the above mentioned links.

Joseph Martinez and Ynes de la Garza, 1673 Church Marriage in Monterrey, Nuevo leon, Mexico

The following is the 1673 marriage of my 8th great grandparents Joseph Martinez and Ynes de la Garza in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This document indicates that a dispensation was done due to them having four grades of consanguinity unfortunately I have yet to find that dispensation. The parents of Joseph are Ignacio Martinez and Maria Flores. The parents of Ynes are Pedro de al Garza and Maria de al Rocha.

Survival The Historical Heritage of La Grulla, Texas 1749 – 1974 a thesis by Narciso A. Guerra and Imelda G. Guerra

I found this book at the University of Texas Pan American’s Special collections. If you are from La Grulla or just want to know more about it I highly recommend the following book. “Survival The Historical Heritage of La Grulla, Texas 1749 – 1974 a thesis by Narciso A. Guerra and Imelda G. Guerra”.

The authors also list their family connection to the first Longorias of La Grulla. You can also find a full map of La Grulla.

I just wish I had more time to go over it since you are not allowed to take it out of the Library I just quickly browsed through it.

If anyone else knows about any other books about La Grulla or it’s people let me know so that I can lsit them here.
