1781 Baptism of Jose Rafael de la Garza, Mier Img145
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

This is the September 9, 1781 baptism of Jose Rafael de la Garza who was baptized in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He is my 4th great-grandfather.

It is very dificult to read. I had to heavily rely on the baptism above his in order to decipher some of the words in this record. The / in the transcription means that there is a line break.

As I mentioned, the record is very hard to read and if I were just browsing the microfilm I would have had missed it. Lucky for me, years ago I came across an index that had been done and the genealogical information was extracted. This si what I needed to find a copy of the original baptism entry.

Baptism of Jose Rafael de la Garza

As you can see he is the son of Francisco Angel de la Garza and Maria Cayetana Peña. I honestly could not make out Peña in the record. Probably the index was done when the record was in a better condition.

Jose Rafael grows up to marry Maria Tomasa Lopez the daughter of Juan Jose Sanchez and Maria Gertrudis Garcia. To view their descendants and ancestors visit: https://lasvillasdelnorte.com/database/

  1. The dates referred to on the LVDN Community Tree are different than this record. The family tree refers to a March 14th 1780 record which I found on ancestry (Nuevo León, Mexico, Catholic Church Records, 1667-1981 for Jph Raphael Cerralvo San Gregorio Magno Bautismos 1761-1824 image 78) and it refers to the parents as Franco de la Garza and Cayetana Pena. So then that is the wrong information??

    1. There are two Jose Rafael de la Garza born to Francisco and Cayetana, one was baptized 14 Mar 1780 and died 25 Oct 1880 in Cerralvo. The other one was baptized 09 Sep 1781 in Mier and this one is the one that married Maria Tomasa Sanchez. This post is the most up-to-date information. The Community Tree will be updated in December.
