1553 Baptism of Maria Ines Rodriguez Mexico City Image 216
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

This is the July 23, 1553 baptism of my 11th great grandmother Maria Ines Rodriguez who was baptized in Mexico City.

I first came across the reference to thsi baptism in the book by Guillermo Garmendia Leal on the descendants of Diego de Montemayor.

It wasn't until earlier this month that I had the chance to look for it.

The record raises several questions. The side says that her name is mayor but the record says that her name is Maria. Should her name be Maria Mayor Montemayor?

Also, her father is just noted as "d montemayor", is this really Diego de Montemayor?

We know from other sources that our ancestor is Maria Ines de Montemayor.

Could this record posibly belong to a sister of hers or to an entirely separate person?

If you have any opinions, please leave them in the comments of this post.

  1. I think this is Maria Ines Rodriguez de Montemayor – daughter of Diego de Montemayor and his second wife Ines Rodriguez. Maria Ines married Baltazar Castano de Sosa and one of their children was Lucas Garcia, who later married Julliana de Quintanilla. so Maria Ines is my 10th great grandmother.

  2. Maria Ines Rodriguez is my 12th great-grandmother. Her daughter with Balthazar Castano de Sosa was Maria Rodriguez de Sosa. Maria's daughters with Capitan Juan Navarro included Ines Navarro (b. 1563), Melchora Navarro (b. 1589), and Mariana Navarro. These three daughters are all my ancestors.

    (1) Ines Navarro (b. 1563): Ines married Francisco Martinez Guajardo (sometimes spelled Guaxardo). Their daughter, Francisca Martinez Guajardo (b. abt 1580), married Domingo de la Fuente (b. abt 1578). Their son, Joseph de la Fuente (b. 1616, d. 1675), is my ancestor.

    (2) Melchora Navarro (b. 1589): Melchora married Captain Martin Sanchez (b. 1580). Their son, Captain Diego Sanchez Navarro, married Maria de Morales Gutierrez. Their daughter, Melchora Sanchez Navarro (b. 1635) married Juan Galindo (b. 1630). Their son, Juan Galindo Navarro married Ynes de los Santos Coy (b. 1660). Their son, Captain Andres Galindo de los Santos Coy (b. 1680) married Maria Geronima Molano de Aguirre (b. abt 1686). Their son, Juan Andres Galindo (b. 1704) married Ana Maria Valdes (b. 1708). Their son, Joseph Ygnacio Galindo (b. 1729), married Antonia Margarita Monica Farias (b. 1731). Their son, Manuel Galindo Farias (b. 1760) married Maria Antonia Rodriguez. Their daughter, Maria Candelaria Galindo (b. 1786), married Ygnacio de la Fuente (b. 1775), who was also known as Ygnacio Fuentes. Their son, Francisco Fuentes (b. 1805) is my ancestor.

    (3) Mariana Navarro (b. 1571, d. 1615): Mariana married Marcos Gonzalez Hidalgo. Their daughter, Beatriz Gonzalez Hidalgo, married Blas de la Garza Falcon (b. 1591, d. 1669). Their son, Captain Lazaro de la Garza Falcon (b. abt 1625), married Petronila Rodriguez Montemayor. Their daughter, Angelina Garza (b. abt 1657) married Captain Joseph Gonzalez de Paredes (b. abt 1649). Their daughter, Josefa Gonzales de Paredes (b. 1685) married Luis de la Fuente. Their son, Thadeo de la Fuente (b. abt 1714), is my ancestor.
