This is the index to the marriage 1803 Marriage of Jose Benito Tanguma and Maria Clara Rosa Vela, they are my 4th great-grandparents who got married in what is now Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
I looked for the original record but I found that the 1803 marriage records for Mier are too damaged to make out anything useful in them.
The above image is the cut out of an index that Don Israel Cavazos Garza made prior to 1978. I say 1978 because that is the year that it was microfilmed. It is very possible that the index was created way before that date.
The church records that I accessed were microfilmed in 1987. It is very possible and likely that the records deteriorated drastically after Don Israel created the index.
So, to make the argument short, his index is the only proof that we have for those damaged years.
Ok, so from the extracted index we ca se that the parents of Jose Benito Tanguma are Jose Antonio Tanguma and Maria Bazan. The parents of Maria Clara Vela are "unknown" and Maria Rosa Vela.
Something that I want to point out is that the records always show a Jose Benito Tanguma and Maria Clara Vela or Jose Benito Tanguma and Maria Clara Barrera.
Some researchers have argued that we may have two different couples and that may be true.
Now, my opinion is that, it is the same couple. The reason for my conclusion is that many of the children overlap (in some records the mom is listed as a Vela and the other as a Barrera) and I also believe that her father's surname might have had been Barrera.
