Descendants of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez 1600-1900
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

This 582-page book contains nine generations of the descendants of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez and his wives Isabel Gomez and Ana Garcia de Quintanilla. It covers the time period between 1600 and 1900. His descendants can be found all over Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Texas and beyond.

Captain Bartolome Gonzalez was born in Moron de la Frontera, Andalucia, Spain, the exact date is uncertain.  Some researchers have about 1598 and others about 1606. Prior to this book there have been two other works, one by Rene Escobar and the other by Guillermo Garmendia Leal.  Rene Escobar in his book “Captain Bartolome Gonzalez and His Descendants” published in 2005, mentions that Captain Bartolome was Married three times. He states that Bartolome married Isabel Gomez de Esquivel, January 6, 1639, in Carmona Spain and declared that he was widowed from Catalina Gonzalez.

For many years researchers, including me, went by the information of Rene Escobar. Then recently Miguel Angel Gonzalez pointed me to the 2007 book by Guillermo Garmendia Leal “Los Gonzalez de Nuevo Leon Tomo I”. In his book he mentions that the 1639 marriage in Spain does not belong to Captain Bartolome and Isabel Gomez, but to another couple with the same names.

He comes to this conclusion based on a marriage record that he found in Tepetitlan, Hidalgo Mexico dated 25 Nov 1631 and the baptism records for their children following that date.

How did Mr. Garmendia know of where to look for these records? Well, Bartolome’s son Andres Gonzalez, in his will dated August 26, 1701, stated that he was “natural” of “Tepetitlan en La Nueva España”. He also stated that both of his parents Bartolome Gonzalez and Isabel Gomes were both neighbors of Tepetitlan, nowadays Tepetitlan, Hidalgo, Mexico.

It is for that reason that this book sides and follows the research of Guillermo Garmendia Leal and not that of Rene Escobar when it comes to the marriages of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez.

The parents of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez remain a mystery to me. I have also yet to discover who the parents of Isabel Gomez are. The parents of his second wife, Ana Garcia, are Lucas Garcia and Juliana de Quintanilla.

Bartolomes, church death record dated February 2, 1672 states:

1672 Bme Gonzalez espanol

Captain Bartolome is my tenth great grandfather through both my paternal and maternal lines. This book is the culmination of over ten years of research and is the perfect way to share it with other researchers like you.

At the moment of writing this book I have only been able to identify 6592 descendants of Captain Bartolome Gonzalez from his marriages to Isabel Gomez and Ana Garcia de Quintanilla.

I truly hope that you find this book useful in your research. Also keep in mind that this book is just a tool, it is still your responsibility to find copies of records and verify my work. In this, I have attempted to included citations for every fact listed in this book so that you may know where my information came from and for you to find records faster.
